How Much Does It Cost to Travel Around the World?

If you spend more time in developed countries (Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan), your costs will be higher. In Europe and Australia, the average cost per person is $ 125 a day. For our family of four, we're an average of $ 350 dollars in these countries.

The most famous question we get asked is how much does it cost to travel the world? Before we would make such a big trip, this was also our biggest question.

The cost is much lower than you think. For long-term, several-month or longer trips, each day costs much less than you normally would spend on a 10-day trip abroad.

Asia, Africa, and South America are cheaper. In places like Cambodia, India, and Nepal, you can spend less than $ 50 per person per day and still eat well and live in a good place. We have an average of $ 185 per day in Southeast Asia, £ 180 a day in Nepal, and $ 155 a day in India.

Plan your trip so that if you visit more countries that are living at a lower cost, it will help keep your costs down. And that's what we did while ensuring that they were still the countries we were interested in.

During our 13-month trip, we spent nine of them in Asia. We also spent six weeks in South Africa. These countries are at the cheap end of the scale. We limited our time in New Zealand and Australia to seven weeks and we restricted our time in Europe to only five weeks. These are all at the expensive end of the scale. We also knew that we could travel to Europe much easier than traveling to Asia because that's where we call home.

One budget source we use is BudgetWorld.com. This is a good tool if you want to get the basic daily costs for each country. Just type in the name of this country and it will take you an average price to travel to that country. This is just an estimate, but it gives you a starting point for how much you can expect to spend in each country.
